City of Oconomowoc — Seventy years after "The Wizard of Oz" first premiered at the old Strand Theatre in downtown Oconomowoc, that milestone will be honored with a special showing of the perennial favorite.
In celebration of its footnote in a fabled chapter of American film history, Oconomowoc will honor the film though a special event planned by Moonlit Movies.
"We're going to step out of the box a bit and in August we're shutting down the street between City Hall and the Four Corners to commemorate the 70th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz," which was premiered here in Oconomowoc," said T.J. Rinaldi, who serves on the Board of Directors for Moonlit Movies.
A 40-foot screen will be set up at City Hall, facing west.
The event will be held on Aug. 13, the third Thursday of the month, in keeping with the usual Moonlit Movie schedule.
"Coincidentally, that is one day later than the 70th anniversary of the original showing of 'The Wizard of Oz,' " said Craig Pruscha, one of the founders of Moonlit Movies.
According to information from Warner Brothers, the movie premiered here on Aug. 12, 1939, which is considered the official anniversary date. The movie had a Hollywood premiere three days later, on Aug. 15, at Grauman's Chinese Theater.
Festival Week begins with the August Street Dance located in Downtown Oconomowoc. Food will be available through area vendors. The beverages and beer tent are sponsored by the Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce. The live band, Cold Sweat & the Brew City Horns, will play from 7-11pm and is sponsored by First Bank Financial Center. The event, providing food, fun and dancing, is sponsored by the Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please contact the Chamber at (262) 567-2666 or www.oconomowoc.org.
